Shrine of Fatima

Enclosure of strong spiritual and divine atmosphere, where reigns above all the faith, devotion and hope, is the recognized Shrine of Fatima, which is located at the Cova da Iria, parish of Fatima, Portugal.

The construction of the Shrine of Fatima was motivated from the time the three children, “The Three Shepherds” (Francisco and Jacinta Marto and Lucia de Jesus), the miracle happens they have received the apparition of Our Lady, in a phased sequence six views that took place between May 13 and October 1917.

Curiously one of the apparitions, the Virgin Mary has made the following request: “I want to make here a chapel in my honor.”

The Shrine of Fatima, venue of pilgrimage, is composed of some spaces which are: the Chapel of the Apparitions (1919), where Our Lady has made the request to the three shepherd children and where is reserved to his own image, the Basilica of Our Lady of Rosario (1928), which are actually buried the bodies of three shepherd children, the Colonnades of 200 columns and 14 altars, making this complex connection between the Basilica and the sides of buildings and grounds which are depicted on top of marble some portuguese saints, the Monument of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (1932), works in bronze and is built precisely to the center of the enclosure for prayer, the Holy Trinity Church (2007), the Nativity (1999), the Chapel of Lausperene (1987), the Berlin Wall (1994), which symbolizes the divine intervention in the fall of communism and the end of the Cold War and instability throughout the world, the famous Great Holm Oak, ancient tree that represents the exact location where the Three shepherds were in prayer, at the time preceding the appearance of Our Lady, among others.

The Shrine of Fatima was in the course of time a special notabilty reception stage and relevant figures in the religious sphere. A special highlight for the visits (first visit in May 1982) of His Holiness Pope John Paul II and more recently, in May 2010, the honorable visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

The Shrine of Fatima is full of symbols of a religious nature, which makes this enclosure a prestigious place of pilgrimage, where every year is visited by millions of visitors from various corners of the planet.
